Using your journal

What if my journal cannot load or save?

Use Try again if the journal cannot load. Check that your browser allows local storage for this site. Keep the same browser and profile. Do not clear this site’s data; that can remove your records.

If a save fails, keep the page open. Your edits stay in the form so you can try saving again. If the app says the save succeeded but the view could not load, choose Load latest view. That action does not repeat the save.

If storage is full, free space elsewhere on the device before retrying. A backup can restore your journal in another browser. Exitmargin cannot recover records that are no longer stored in this browser.

What is a holding?

A holding is an asset you own or a liability you owe. Add its name, category, starting month, and balance. Examples include savings, investments, and loans.

Open Holdings →
What is a monthly checkpoint?

A checkpoint records the holdings and balances included in one month. Choose Record checkpoint on Home to review and save that month. Saved months appear in Journal. You can leave months unrecorded.

Open Journal →
How do I update a balance?

In Journal, choose Add / update checkpoints and select the month. For the current month, you can also open the checkpoint from Home. Change the balance, check which holdings are included, and save the checkpoint.

To change a holding’s name, category, or tracking dates, open its details from Holdings. Review the effect on saved months before confirming a change.

How do I change the currency?

For a new journal, Exitmargin suggests a currency from the region in your browser’s language settings. This can differ from your location or preferred currency. If no supported region is available, the suggestion is USD. An existing journal keeps its saved currency; older journals without a currency setting remain INR.

Open More and choose the journal currency. Review the change before saving. It applies to all holdings and history. Saved numbers stay the same; no exchange-rate conversion takes place.

Open More →
Can I create my own categories?

In More, add a custom category for assets or liabilities. It will appear beside the built-in choices when you add or edit a holding. You can rename it later. Renaming changes its label everywhere, without changing balances or checkpoint history.

To delete a custom category, first move all its holdings to another category. This includes past holdings. Built-in categories cannot be renamed or deleted. Custom categories are included in your backup.

Manage categories →
How do I back up or move my journal?

In More, choose Download backup. Keep the file private. On another browser or device, choose Choose backup file and review its contents before replacing local data.

Import replaces the destination journal. Export its existing records first if you want to keep them. There is no automatic cloud backup or device sync.
